Operating Room Nurse- A Fulfilling Career Path

As an operating room nurse, you have to provide specialized nursing services to critically ill and the mentally disturbed patients and promote physical and mental health within the medical treatment facility. The Operating Room nurse is basically responsible for assisting the doctors in preparing patients and in the operating rooms for surgery. It calls for preparation and maintaining of sterile medical supplies and helping with preoperative and postoperative procedures. You need to be prepared to treat emergency cases without getting perturbed and with a lot of patience. The patient's medical history needs to be examined along with his records while conducting basic duties like taking temperature, pulse and blood pressure.

There are plenty of options also available in the operating nurse career such circulating nurse in the operating room and anesthesia care nursing. Nurses who provide anesthesia have to have least two years of critical care experience and should have completed the course from a nurse anesthesia school for training. Circulating nurses are responsible for everyone in the operating room on any particular day. They are responsible as patient spokesman ensuring that the patient being operated on is the correct patient and that the doctor is performing the correct procedure.

Nurses have many career opportunities available to them when they complete an AOC qualifying course in operating room nursing or one year of supervised training in operating room nursing. The patients undergoing surgery come completely under the care of the nurses attending the operating theater. Their duties start with preparing and ensuring that the operating theater is ready for the operating procedures and seeing to it that all the equipments and special procedures that are to be done before any operation are all taken care off. Regular procedures and emergencies, if any. They are also responsible for all the equipments while the operation is under progress and they need to ensure all the necessary tools are kept ready depending on the operation that is to take place.

The OR Nurse also manages operating room activities like taking control of OR personnel and making sure they have completed their routine checks and given responsibilities, which could be anything from ensuring the equipments, are sterilized to keeping records and relevant documents updated. Other responsibilities include maintaining correct and complete records and reports, and helping with ongoing, in house training programs by continually updating already advanced knowledge and responsibilities of nursing personnel.

Operating room nurses, are also referred to as preoperative nurses, are usually qualified and registered nurses who work in co ordination with patients who are to be operated upon. In today's world, nursing jobs are in demand in hospitals, different types of clinics and surgical units that operate during the day. In hospitals, their work is to interact directly with patients before the operation during the operation and post the operation.

Plenty of nursing jobs are available in the world today. Scrub nurses duty is to hand the medical instruments to the operating doctor during surgery while the circulating nurse observes checks and monitors all the equipments during the operation and ensures that they run smoothly. The nurses whose duty is in the operating theater are responsible to ensure that the operating room is ready in all respects for the operating procedure. This would mean making sure, all the equipments are properly audited and the patient's record is recorded in detail. The consent form is to be filled by the concerned family before the operation begins.

The operating room nurses position in the operating theater is very crucial as the entire operating procedure depends on her efficiency and job knowledge as they almost operate as secondary physicians in all respects. Infact half the job like suturing the patients after the surgery and controlling the bleeding is an important part of a operating nurses job. These nurses play the role of mediators and need to keep the patients informed about the upcoming surgery and give them post surgical advice as well. Assisting them and changing the dressing when necessary. The Operating Room Nurse works under the direction of the Manager while carrying out nursing responsibilities and duties.

  2. The RN specializing in Perioperative Nursing practice performs nursing activities in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the patients' surgical experience. Registered nurses enter perioperative nursing practice at a beginning level depending on their expertise and competency to practice. As they gain knowledge and skill, they progress on a continuum to an advanced level of practice.

as what I've researched earlier, based on the Standards and Recommended Practices for Perioperative Nursing--A.O.R.N., the operating room nurse provides a continuity of care throughout the perioperative period, using scientific and behavioral practices with the eventual goal of meeting the individual needs of the patient undergoing surgical intervention. This process is dynamic and continuous, and requires constant reevaluation of individual nursing practice in the operating room.

And I hope it could be actuated someday.

I would be self-fulfilled when i chose to cling on this career.

  6. Operating room nurse-A fulfilling Career Path

Being an operating room nurse is not all about wearing scrubs and gloves. Handling a life is not easy as counting sheep. In every move that they do the patients life is at stake. In order to be a good operating room nurse, one, is that they must possess a good ethics within them. Operating room nurses must stand as an angel from the beginning and throughout the operation to their patient.

As I see the operating team in their scrubs and doing stuffs in order to save the patient I can see "saviors". They are doing whatever they can to save peoples lives. When I become an RN someday , hopefully, I chose to be in this team because entrusted with the patient life is a great privilege especially when you have done the operation together with the operating teams successfully.

  11. Operating Room is the most challenging area of the hospital for me. This is the area where the health care team saves life of the patient.

My first exposure at the Operating room was last August 2009 and i was quite anxious and nervous since i don't like seeing blood and internal organs of the human. I had my first major case which is appendectomy and after that I slowly overcome my fear. I tell to myself that it's not that scary after all.

I am so amazed of the jobs of the doctors and nurses at the OR since they saves life of the patient. They should be call "Heroes or "Saviors".

As a student I make sure that I can maintain the sterility of the environment and I memorized the procedures so the next time I will handle another major case, i wont give hassles to the doctors and nurses @ the operating room.

It's fulfilling and heartwarming to think that you save other people's life so when I became a registered nurse someday, I would love to be an Operating Room nurse.

The patient's life depends on it, being an OR nurse is not a joke, it should be skillful and knowledgeable in all aspect in the Operating Room.Handling one's life is a serious case, that this,is the part that you should be able to give care, passion and support to the patient to reduce his/her anxiety.

When we talk about "OPERATING ROOM" its is a room where all micro-organisms does not exist. It is the Sterile room where all instruments are cleaned and autoclave. As much as possible, OR staffs remain strict when it become to sterility.

  15. Operating room for me is the top most important and challenging area in the hospital where patient's life is being saved. Surgical team are the "heroes" of all generation, since they are saving the life of an ill patient eversince. An O.R. nurse is one of them, and it's the exciting yet, fearful position that a nurse would choose to be.

Being an O.R. nurse is not easy. You must know everything since you have a lot of task to perform, like maintaining a sterile area and equipment, as well as to provide patient's comfort, and more.

It's not as easy as what others think it is, especially when you're a first timer that you almost tremble thinking of what you gonna do, and what will gonna happen while the surgery is on going. That happened to me in my first exposure in O.R. way back in third year. Though I felt nervous, it was also exciting! I was amazed that I saw internal organs of human being like me, and I can imagine my own organs like the one I saw with my two eyes.

Yes, it's true that being an Operating Room nurse is indeed a "fulfilling" career. And if I'm already a registered nurse someday, it's my pleasure to be part of the O.R. family.

  44. For me an operating room nurse is a healthcare worker who is a professional registered nurse and assists the surgeon and the surgical
team in their tasks. Operating room nurses are responsible for the supply of all of the surgical needs and for keeping of inventory
of all of the various items that were used during the operation. They also tend to the health and care of the patient in the
operating room, oversee the work organization within the operating theatre, and mediate between the various hospital
departments, the surgeons, and the management.

I think it is among the greatest privileges in life to do this and and take care of other people. Nursing isn't my first career. Nor even my second. I'm not one of those people who always wanted to be a nurse.

  48. Being an operating room nurse is never been easy. Their duties and responsibilities are not as simple as anybody else’s profession. Their function is to provide a continuity of care throughout the perioperative period, using scientific and behavioral practices with the goal of meeting the needs of the patient undergoing surgical intervention. Nursing of patients who are experiencing surgery is an exciting, difficult, demanding task. Yet, for many nurses, surgical nursing is a most challenging and gratifying specialty.

For me, it is very important to know the tasks of an O.R. nurse. One of which is to maintain sterility inside the operating room. Also, we are held responsible in preparing patients emotionally and mentally within the medical treatment facility.

By looking these roles, to be an O.R. nurse as part of the health care team is really a fulfilling career path that should not be taken for granted. That is why, I challenge myself to study hard and to be versatile and lenient since it is my dream to become an O.R. nurse someday. Being an O.R. nurse must possess the three important factors: knowledgeable, skillful, and most importantly the good attitude towards patient since they are mainly the reason why we commit to the calling of this noble profession.

. I’m just a beginner in the operating room but I’m happy during my first exposure. When I had my first case, I just realized that it’s so wonderful and awesome when your there assessing the physician.

This article gives me some information needed to become an operating nurse soon and gives some hints some information I don’t know during preoperative, intraoperative,
and postoperative. I learned some things I don’t know and as I read this article, I’ve been thinking on how important an operating nurse is during operation.
As an operating nurse, he/she able to know the duties and responsibilities to the patient and specially to the physician.

As foresight,an operating room nurse' career path to be fulfilling, I guess, has to come from the sense of being able to serve an important role in making the operating room a safe environment in every procedure performed, for not does the patient's wellbeing rest on the hands of the surgeon, but so does the need for a competent operating room nurse.

  57. I agree that being an operating room nurse is a fulfilling career but it requires you to be responsible enough and must have adequate knowledge for any OR procedures. As an OR nurse you must coordinate with the other surgical members like the surgeon and anesthesiologist to have a successful outcomes of the operations. And an OR nurse especially the scrub nurse must perform sterile technique while in an operation to avoid the risk of infection.

Furthermore,an OR nurse has plenty of jobs to be done aside from assisting, documentation must be perform before and after the operation.Because of that,we should love what you do for us to achieve fulfillment in life.

  59. Being a operating room nurse is one tough job. Many nurses have many choices and many opportunities, but being a operating room nurse must be taking care of seriously and do not take it for granted since you have to be skillful and responsible enough to handle being OR nurse. If you make one mistake, it will greatly affect the people who are involved, like the patient, if you did not know if he/she have inform consent and did not know what procedure should be performed, then it will have a great risk and have more problem if that would happened. Another example that would affect the person involve is the surgeon, if you did not clarify the certain procedure and just leave it, the surgeon will think that the procedure that is being advised is correct since they thought that you have already clarified it. There are so much things a OR nurse can do.

If I were to ask, being an OR nurse is great but I myself is not good enough to be an OR nurse since I still lack experience and need to improve myself. I know that there is a lot to do if I were going to be an OR nurse so there is so much to learn to be able to achieve this if being an or nurse is my choice of career.

  60. Being an OR nurse is a big responsibility, you have to be competent enough to do all the necessary procedures with skills and knowledge. The main responsibility of a scrub nurse is to maintain the sterility of the field and to assist the needs of the physician. The circulating nurse must monitor the vital signs of the patient.
An OR nurse must be oriented and knows his/her responsibility and must have presence of mind because during operation patient's life is at stake and in the hands of the medical team lies the future of each patients. So I think that every student nurses must improve there skills and knowledge and love nursing.

  61. NURSING, a very hard and a very wide field. To be a NURSE, you need knowledge, skill and attitude. The responsibilities toward our patient and to the other health providers are a must to be carry out.Its our job to give care to our patient, getting vital sign and giving health teaching, its our responsibilities. We need knowledge, to have an idea about different kind of diseases or abnormalities in our body to be cure,we must know everything that must be know in our field.Skills, we need it to carry out the procedure correctly and accurately. And the most important is the attitude, we must know how to talk to our patient to get an accurate data from them, we are their voice and their bridge toward the other health providers like the doctors.

im a nursing student and im still a beginner. But i will do my best to be a great nurse. So i will study hard and develop my skills in this field.

To be an OR nurse is so complicated because the life of a person and the success of the procedure or surgery is also in our hand.We are a part of the team and we must do our part, our job, our responsibilities in the field because we are a NURSE.

  64. being an OR nurse is a critical and challenging career.the operating room nurse provides a continuity of care throughout the operation period, using scientific and behavioral practices with the eventual goal of meeting the individual needs of the patient undergoing surgical intervention. This process is dynamic and continuous, and requires constant reevaluation of individual nursing practice in the operating room. Operating Room Nurses assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate their patients just like every other nurse.Whether scrubbing, circulating, or supervising other team members, the OR nurse is always aware of the total environment, as well as the patient's reaction to the environment and the care given during all three phases of surgical intervention. The OR nurse is knowledgeable about aseptic technique, patient safety, legal aspects of nursing, and management of nursing activities associated with the specific surgical procedure being performed.

OR nursing is unique: it provides a specialty service during the perioperative period that stresses the need for continuity of care and respect for the individuality of the patient's needs.

OR nurse is really a profession by heart.

  66. Care provider, Manager, Educator. Name it! This are just few of the roles an OR nurse play. They directly give their patients the care needed for optimum health recovery who says managers are only those working in the bank? We also have Nurse Managers in OR. And if the people think that Teachers are the only Educators, they should think twice!

Now, I could justify why a lot of students would like to take up nursing. Its not just about having plenty of options in ones career but its a course that needs not only knowledge and skills but more importantly is the attitude. You can't be a good nurse or perform your duty well if you don't have the eagerness to have those who are weak, because the responsibility of an OR nurse does not end after the patient goes out in the four corners of the operating room. As the saying goes," its not yet over when its over".

I admit I am just a beginner in this field yet, i have observed the things/routine did by the professional Operating Nurse. 77. Career opportunities in nursing have greatly expanded, but have you ever ask yourself about how fulfilling career an operating room nurse could be?

I may say that their works were just limited at four corners, their concern was just sterility, and their major role is just to assist the doctor during operations. But after having read the article the path of operating room nurse is not definite, since they were dealing lives. Aside from it there are other roles that operating room nurses undertake which are beyond from my mind, this are anesthesia care nursing, serve as patient spokesman ensuring that the patient being operated on is the correct patient and that the doctor is performing the correct procedure, manages operating room activities like taking control of OR personnel and making sure they have completed their routine checks and given responsibilities.

The surgical nurse is primarily responsible for the support of the doctors in preparing patients and operating rooms for surgery. It calls for the preparation and maintenance of sterile medical supplies and support in pre-and postoperative procedures.
