How to become an Operating Room Nurse...

From the outside, the world of the operating room nurse seems shrouded in gauze, masks, caps, gowns and scrubs. It is where nursing students tread with immense caution – each one of them hesitant to make a move for fear of contaminating a sterile field. However, seasoned OR nurses dance between operating theaters with grace and ease – a feat only achieved after years of practice and experience. What really lies behind the doors that say ‘Sterile’? What can nurses who want to join the Operating Room team look forward too? What does an operating room nurse really do and how can somebody become one.

What is Operating Room Nursing?

Operating Room Nursing, also known as perioperative nursing, is a specialized field of nursing practice. Nurse practitioners in this filed mainly practice their craft in Operating theaters. They work assisting surgeons, handing them the tools they need to perform the operation required. Other than that, OR nurses are also the ones who handle patients pre and post op. These nurses will be the ones to receive the patients into the OR and they will be the ones to send them off.

Roles of the OR Nurse

Beyond the Operating Room doors, lies a world that is more ordinary that most nurses think, well as ordinary as hospitals get. It is filled of all sorts of nurses – every type from the stereotypical scrub nurse to little known sponge and suture nurses.

Contrary to popular belief, not every nurse assigned in the OR work alongside doctors during surgeries. Some of them work as nurse managers, others work in the recovery room. Still, a select few work as nurse anesthesiologists. Below are some of the roles that operating room nurses undertake.

· Scrub Nurses– Scrub nurses are the nurses who have direct contact with the Surgical team and the patient during surgery. Scrub nurses stand alongside doctors, handing them the required instruments. They may also be called to retract tissue – whenever required. The scrub nurse is the classic image of the Operating Room nurse – this is the OR nurses are portrayed in movies and photographs.

The duties of the scrub nurse greatly depend on the institution where they work. In some hospitals it is the scrub nurse’s duty to gown and glove the surgeon and other members of the surgical team. In others, OR techs and nurse assistants exists to do that job for them. Some scrub nurses also take the shape of so-called sponge nurses.

· Sponge Nurses - Sponge nurse are OR nurses that have been assigned to rinse or clean the operating tools as soon as a surgeon puts it down. Sponge nurses are necessary especially, if the surgery requires a lot of debridement and excavation.

· Suture Nurses - Some nurses, called suture nurses – are allowed and licensed to sew a patient up after surgery. Suture nurses are often required to undergo training, certification and licensure before they can practice. The laws for licensure and certification of suture nurses vary from country to country and state to state.

· Nurses Anesthesiologists – Nurses Anesthesiologists are a special breed of OR nurses that only began to exist during the later part of the 20th century. These are highly specialized and trained nurses that have spent time and money in order to get a license. These nurses are advance practice nurses (APNs) and their field is a steadily growing field that is increasing in popularity each year.

· Circulating Nurses – Circulating nurses can be any nurse from the OR team. Most nurses who are not busy work as circulating nurses. These nurses are the ones who make sure that the surgical team has everything they need. They will be the ones to run to the Central Supply Room and get supplies when necessary. The roles of the circulating nurse may also be taken over by nursing assistants and OR technicians.

· Nurse Managers and OR Head Nurses – The main role of Nurse Managers and Head Nurses may no longer involve scrubbing in to surgery. They are the ones involved of making sure that the OR is in order. They may also be the ones in charge of making organizing the OR and OR staff schedules.

How To Become an Operating Room Nurse

In order to become an operating room nurses, nurses must first have the right qualifications. In order to practice, nurses must first have a degree in Nursing. Some countries like the US and the Philippines require their nurses to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. The US is also open to nurses who have completed an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. These nurses are then required to gain licensure before they can practice. Other countries like the UK require their nurses to gain NVQ levels before they can work.

Some employers, especially those in the US, may also prefer it if their nurses become certified OR nurses. Certification is provided by Operating Room Nurses association and organizations in the US.

The Philippines also has its own organization in the form of ORNAP (Operating Room Nurses Association of the Philippines). The ORNAP provides their members with seminars and continuing education programs.

Work Opportunities for OR Nurses

There are a lot of work opportunities for OR nurses. In fact, OR nurses together with Critical Care Nurses, are a few of the most sought after nurses in the world. In order to secure a job abroad, nurses must make sure that they have enough work experience while they are still here in the Philippines.

Love this topic, because it gives motivation and courage for us student nurses to learn more, and be able to finished a 4 year BSN degree, then additional time for more education & certification required to work in an operating room. Surgical nurses are exposed to high stress & work long hours, they are expected to assist the surgeon and must have a broad knowledge of medicine, in terms of knowing their patients a surgical nurse must be a representative in the operating room he/she must know his/her patient intimately familiar with the patient medical history as well as the current emotional and psychological state..
So generally as Operating room nurse is not so easy.. My salute to every nurses who are very devoted to their work.

  9. As an operating room nurse, you have to provide specialized nursing services to critically ill and the mentally disturbed patients and promote physical and mental health within the medical treatment facility.

The operating room nurses position in the operating theater is very crucial as the entire operating procedure depends on her efficiency and job knowledge as they almost operate as secondary physicians in all respects. Infact half the job like suturing the patients after the surgery and controlling the bleeding is an important part of a operating nurses job. These nurses play the role of mediators and need to keep the patients informed about the upcoming surgery and give them post surgical advice as well. Assisting them and changing the dressing when necessary. The Operating Room Nurse works under the direction of the Manager while carrying out nursing responsibilities and duties.

  12. Nurses in this field provide care and support to patients before, during, and after surgery. These nurses are responsible for maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room, monitoring the patient during surgery, and coordinating care throughout the process. They are also responsible for making sure the OR team provides the patient with the best care possible.

As a student nurse, working in OR is not a easy task/job. I feel anxious and fear in my first duty. Fear to see a blood and organs inside the body, and also fear to the doctors and nurses who work there, because some seniors last year told us that the OR nurses are very strict and mad always if there is a student on duty, now i know why they are strict when it comes to work.

Working in the OR is an ongoing learning experience, and i love the challenge of it.Being a OR nurse we should have a good health, strong nerves, good feet and hands, cheerful, intelligent, sincere and have an interest to people.

If you're looking for a meaningful and well-paying occupation, consider a career as a OR Nurse. It deals life and death of our client, Or nurses and doctors are consider as a "Heroes"

" We have different feedbacks with regards to that question, right? Some of us said, " We just want to learn how to cure ill persons for us to knowledgeable and skillful enough once we're exposed to ill persons. Others said that they just want to work on abroad. Although that we have different goals in our lives but still we have the same pattern or steps that we need to achieve first before we become a nurse.

Before you would be considered as an operating nurse, you should show all your skills that you have learned from your College years in BSN once your having your training. Be sure that you are knowledgeable and skillful enough in all the procedures and settings inside the operating room. If you have achieved all the qualifications needed, then, "CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!" You deserve the name so called " operating nurse ".You've done a great job.

Surgical nurses are exposed to high stress and work long hours in hospital emergency rooms.

you have to gain wide-ranging knowledge of many different surgical procedures. Some of the primary responsibilities of the surgical nurse take place during the actual surgery itself. The surgical nurse in the operating room is expected to assist the surgeon and must have a broad knowledge of medicine.

and also you have to get to know your patients. Surgical nurse is the patients representative in the operating room. A surgical nurse must know his or her patients much more intimately than a doctor can. The surgical nurse must be intimately familiar with the patients medical history as well as the current emotional and

Develop self-confidence and learn to trust your instincts. In the operating room, split-second decisions that can have life or death consequences are common. In these situations, you simply do not have the luxury of time enabling you to second guess yourself.

It is not easy to be there in the operating room, assessing the physician on the instruments needed. i felt nervous during that time, I cannot explained my feelings. And that makes me realized how difficult is being an operating nurse. I'm afraid on everything in there, to my clinical instructor and speciallly the doctors whom I'd given the instruments.

Operating room nurse is not an easy job... You have to maintain the sterility in the area to avoid any infection after the operation of the patient... We also need to know the responsibilities of circulating nurse and scrub nurse ….Being an OR nurse, you have to familiarize all the instruments to avoid giving the wrong instrument to the surgeon and know the responsibilities of circulating nurse and scrub nurse....

The OR's in hospitals are much more exciting and challenging for me…Always remember, in this profession, we are dealing with life,..
Becoming an OR nurse basically involve hard work, patience and time ..If you want to be an operating room nurse, study hard and pass the NCLEX-RN exam... and the most important, pray and have faith in GOD...

  44. Operating Room Nurses, also called OR nurses or perioperative nurses, manage the operating room by organizing surgical instruments and equipment, maintaining clean facilities, assisting surgeons during operations, overseeing other nurses and ensuring the most comfortable environment for patients.

OR Nurses first become registered nurses, and this requires completing a two, three or 4-year Nursing program along with a certification exam. After earning RN certification, a Perioperative Nurse must usually gain experience as an RN before qualifying as an OR Nurse.

  46. OR nurse, What always comes into my mind is that these people are strict and terror. Another thing is that they're only busy when there are patients who would undergo operation. But after reading this article. I've realized that duties and responsibilities of an OR nurse does not end when an operation ends.OR nurses job is more crucial than I thought.

Its not just about handing the doctor instruments but also making sure that the instruments they are handling are all sterile. Its not just being meticulous but its the best way I think to make sure that their patient is protected from any infection. So, who says OR nurses do not care for their patients? They do...They even have to scold those students who are clumsy, it is for us, students to learn and practice to be more responsible for rendering care to our patients, just like what OR nurses often do.

An OR nurse is not as easy as what others think. They are the one who will help the surgeon to make the operation easier and make sure that all of the equipments can be used.

  48. Other people once said, an operating nurse also takes part in saving ill people who undergo a massive operation.

After reading this article, i have decided not to focus on the step by step basis on how to become a professional operating nurse. But, i have to focus on how OR nurses takes their responsibilities on the field.

OR nurses usually does the sponge counting, assisting the doctor, preparing the instruments to be used in the operation, assist the patient. And the major major thing that OR nurses are doing is to care and assess if the patient is safe and okay-before,during and after the operation. Therefore I conclude, being an operating nurse is never that easy !

To be an OR Nurse you should have presence of mind and have confidence during the surgery. You must familiarize the instrument in the OR and its function. You must practice strict standard precautions. It is not an easy task to become an OR nurse but its a great profession.

  52. How to become OR nurse? What makes nursing more exciting? Is the fact that there are plenty of options in the OR nurse career. Though I've never seen nurse, anesthesiologists and suture nurses, I know it takes years of experience and practice to become a good one.

If I were to choose what role to take in OR, I would still choose to be a scrub nurse, from gowning to gloving to assisting and handling the surgeon the instruments they need. You would actually see the whole performed operation! Thought its gonna be a long day for a scrub nurse specially after long hours of standing, but its something to call a great day!

  54. This is a good article.. It just shows how OR nurses do their jobs very well.

In addition with that, being a student nurse is not an easy thing to do. We should inculcate in our minds all of the principles that should be done inside the OR. It is also important in every student to know every little thing to do in the OR. They should know how to manipulate and of course they should take their initiatives regarding the needs of the surgeon..
