Scary Operating Room No More...

As patient for surgery, you will usually be taken to a waiting area. In many hospitals, parents are allowed to go to this area with you. It is going to be very boring there since you will just be waiting on a stretcher. The good part is that many hospitals allow your parents to stay so that you have some company. During this time, nurses and the anesthesiologist will check on you a lot. They need to know your blood pressure and heart rate and stuff like that. Their job is to make you comfortable and take very good care of you.
When it is your turn to go to the Operating Room, your parents will go to a special waiting room that has nice couches and chairs so that they can wait for you to be done. This room is really close so don't worry about them being far away. At this time, you will probably be a little sleepy from the medicine they are giving you in the I.V. This is normal. The doctors and nurses will be wearing 'scrubs' like the ones at the right. [We really had fun putting them on during our tour!] All of this weird looking stuff protects the doctors, nurses, and you from germs. The operating room (or O.R.) may seem scary, but it's not when you know that a team of doctors and nurses are nearby. Their job is YOU.There are large cabinets filled with towels, medicine, and supplies in them. They have locks on the cabinets that can only be opened by doctors and nurses. The room is sterile which means that it is very clean. This is so you do not get germs from anyone in the room. The walls and ceilings are also cleaned with the best cleaning wash there is. The doctors and nurses wear masks, gloves, and caps to protect everyone from germs. The Operating Room is filled with a whole lot of equipment that you won't recognize. Even though it looks like there is stuff everywhere, the doctors and nurses know where everything is and take really good care of you.

  5. The first operation happens when God get adams rib to create a woman to be his partner.Therefor If God is a doctor then God gave also a doctor for us to be operated when we have our infirmities inside or outside our body.

Scary operating room no more because we have our God that will protect us and guide the doctor in having their operation.

Therefor we will hope only to God that he will always keep us safe in everything that we will be doing in our life.

To God be the glory because great thing he has done.

  6. I agree.. That Operating Rooms seems scary but with me who handled already four cases i admit that my first time on Operating Room I was way too scared but I'm thankful enough that we student Nurses have our Clinical instructor to guide us as well as the Doctors and other surgical teams who give us information and a little discussion about the operation.

Reasons are overflowing why we should not be scared when we hear the word Operating Room. Some reasons I know is that Surgical Teams and the rest of the staffs exerts so much effort to make the operation a successful one and not to mention how the people there maintain sterility (of course OR gud..^^) we make sure the patients are in good hand and when the staff say they can, they really mean it so patients as well as S.O's must be rest assured that they are safe when they are talking about the security of the Patient and the case. So why worry?? scary Operating Room No More..

  7. from a patient's perception, of course operating rooms are scary. i mean who really wants to be cut open, no one right? and the pain, who really want to get hurt purposely? But that's because of the lack of information that they have that makes them afraid.. and this is a usual scenario in the operating room. that's why we have our perioperative nursing.. :D

but operating rooms are not scary. when you have doctors and nurses that take good care you, there's really nothing to worry about.. ^^

  8. Sir if you still remember, one of your picture here in your blog was I was the one who took picture with you and nike and the rest of the surgical staff, it was taken last year month of August when I am still on 3rd yr. level having an on call duty and I was the one who first completed the 5 cases in only 2 days of on call duty and I thank you for that Sir, for have a long patience assisting us especially that was my first scarry moment entering the operating room and I was so observant and scared, but I have to stand and fight my fear because all the chances were there already and I have to grab the opportunity to take all the challenges as a student scrub nurse and student circulating nurse and willing to do what it takes to reach my goal. My experienced was very remarkable and I enjoyed it very much being the first one who coped the challenge and is definitely worth it.

Well anyway about this article, it draws out that in the operating room the patient is the center of attention and the surgical team maintain the aseptic technique to prevent patient at risk for infection.

It is normal to a patient experience of fear in the operating room especially it is you who is facing between life and death but no one will help you, only you leave it to the lord and to the rest of the surgical team.

  9. Among the areas inside the hospital, Operating Room is the safest place because the health care providers take good care as possible for the patient.

As I read this article I appreciate it because it speaks more to the patient of how they will overcome their anxiety during the operation. This article may help the client’s perception about operating room is scary, in fact most of the people is scared to undergo surgery because who really wants to be cut and open their abdomen and experience pain, no one right? So client WORRY NOT! The operating room may seem scary, but it’s not. The purpose why doctor’s and nurse’s are made is to give care and because their job is YOU.

I highly recommend this article to be published on the public to correct people’s misconception about scary operating room and to lessen the anxiety of the patient .And through this information we can help the clients to be comfortable during the operation.

  10. Upon entering the OR it is true that you can’t deny the feeling of a little intimidating especially when you are first timer as what I experienced during our first exposure, but then that was only in the first. The next is history.

For the patient who undergone surgery it is expected to the client a little nervous that’s why they take medication (anti-anxiety) for it is about life and death procedure. That is why client teaching is advised to help the client not to feel scary for they were oriented and knowledgeable enough.

As I observed in the operating room operating nurse and surgeons use gowns to protect their selves, to be sterile and get away from any germs, not because they are scared about the patient. their function is to make the patient in safe and in good care. Its only a self defense coz we are dealing any kind of diseases that may transmitted to us or to any member in the health team.
Only you and your family can do is to relax and pray for the successful operation.

Yes I agree with the said article. From the word itself "Operating Room" sounds like scary but if you go through it, you'll find fulfillment and challenging if you really know what is the essence behind it.. .DEALING LIVES!!. yes it is ..

Many questions triggered on our mind. What's inside the operating room? .What processes and operations undergo? .is it safe for the patient to be there? What are the procedures? What are those scary instruments?..and as you will see the clothes of the health team provider also look so scared for those who don't know yet..

It sounds scary because it deals with lives. Patients will be free from any dangerous diseases that can possibly put them into death.

Surgeons, Anesthesiologist, Nurses and other health Team providers are doing their very best to save lives. Although their clothes specifically the gowns, masks and bonnets that makes them scary look, but.. ..this only protects the patient by providing sterility .Since invading patients body, can be dangerous if sterility will not be obtained. Patients might harbor or will get microorganisms inside their body that might put them to death and complications of their diseases..

Patient's loved ones have their trust to health team members for they allowed the patient to undergo the operation

  13. yes i agree that OPERATING ROOM is a scary room.. but as i enter the area it was not..as we are dealing with the life of the patient.we assure them to be comfortable during the procedure.

doctors, nurses, anesthesiologist and other health care team are doing the procedure safe and maintain sterility for we are dealing with lives.

  14. Operating Room. The word itself sounds eerie, at first. Even we, student nurses, at first approach will find the area scary ... but actually, it is not the area alone. :) We somehow create this anxiety due to insufficient information we gather outside our environment. Lucky us, student nurses, we have the privilege to get inside, observe and be part of the SURGICAL TEAM. Nonetheless, there is nothing to be afraid of. Everything is well-organized and of course, sterility is highly-observed. So why'd you have to worry anyway? I mean, the area itself is just a mere room. However, there are these unfamiliar instruments and its purpose that sets apart from a room.

For the soon-to-be patients, they don't even have to worry much. This area is intended for you to be well ... I mean, getting rid of the foreign objects inside your body or perhaps, remove whatever complications your body is suffering of. I believe no one will die inside the area since the SURGICAL TEAM MEMBERS will ensure the survival of the patient. And make sure the procedure will be a success, isn't it?

Let's make the system right. Let's redefine the perspective view of each individual by imparting what we've learned and observed. That's the primary role of student nurses, eh? We have to at least handle this one or else your patient might suffer from nervous breakdown, where any of us wouldn't like that to happen.

Just go beyond what your senses can do. ♥

  15. Operating room is NOT that scary for me. You may be scared not because of the people you'll see inside the OR but because of the environment and the different kinds of instruments you'll see there. You may be scared when a doctor and scrub nurse wear their bonnets, masks, gowns and gloves, it is NOT just because they are preventing themselves from infections but because they are also protecting you from transmitting infections from them as well.

You don't have to worry no more because everything and everybody that surrounds you is sterile. You must be expecting that. Doctors and nurses knew what to do and how the instruments are being used properly. They will count the instruments prior to surgery and count it again before the procedure will be done to assure that nothing's left inside your body. While the anesthesiologist is checking your blood pressure every now and then.

See how they care? SO WORRY NO MORE :)

  16. Operating room is not that scary. It is just a simple room which sterility is observed. The main purpose is the safety of the patient.Nurses tends to make patient comfortable prior to the procedure.

patients have nothing to worry about because the surgical team knows everything to be done.before and after the procedure. aiming for every patient to get better...........

  17. Operating Room personnel are known not scared in the area. It has a big different in us first timer. What I felt in my first day of duty as a student nurse is scared and nervous. I knew for sure others also felt like this. How much more for the patient who will be undergo surgery? I think they will be the most person to be scare.

Operating Room is a special area in the hospital in which the invasive procedures and surgery performed. The OR personnel are wearing scrub suit, bonnet and mask as well as the student nurse.During the operation the Surgical team are wearing gown and gloves, even though they looking weird,it has a purpose it is to protect there selves and patient from germs and infection. Most patient looking at them are felt scared.

But then they don't have to worry because the surgical team is there to do their responsibilities and duties to make sure that the patient will be able to recover and become comfortable.

Patient may also felt safe and comfortable because their parents and love life is there waiting outside the OR to guide and attain your needs. The OR nurse are also there in Recovery Room to care for you. So, scary Operating Room no more....

  19. OPERATING ROOM, a special and a field that must be sterile always because it is where different procedures and surgery done. In my first exposure in the OR, i felt very scary and nervous. But i think, my feelings cant be compared to the feeling of the patient who will undergo an operation. so it is so important to help them to lessen their anxiety and fear.

We, student nurse, can help by explaining the procedure to the patient, giving care and do health teaching. We must give assurance to them that the operation will be fine. And the most important person i think that can help in our patient is their family. They can give something that cant be given by the others that can help in making our patient become strong in facing the door of the OR and will feel no nervousness at all.

  21. This article summarizes for us readers especially for those individual who planned to get inside the operating room and for those patient who planned to undergo a certain operation; that as the patient enters the OR, he/she may feel either relaxed and prepared or fearful and highly stressed. 22. Operating room? I do admit that I am one of those who are scared of it, of what’s going to be in their. This is because of misconceptions I heard. But since I am a nursing student I realized I needed to counter the misconception I had, and succeeded beyond my expectations about what’s inside of it. And it did successfully happened.

How about the patients who will undergo to an operation? For sure, they will experience anxiety and doubts about what’s going to happened. It is very much important to be informed how competent and how skilled full surgical members are, in order for the patient to lessen the unpleasant feeling they are experiencing. And giving an information about operating room has a great help so we can able state “scary operating room no more”.

Those doubts would be quickly erased by the help of this article,…;D

  23. For other people's thinking it is so scary because they don't know what will happen inside the OR..that's the nice thing about nurses because they are there to comfort the patient..and explain the procedure what will the doctor do...Us student nurse sometimes there are seen that is scary but all you have to do is to relax yourself..don't things complicated..because patient also will feel ease if they saw you that your afraid..

Doctors are confident to do there job, so nurses are confident what the doctors are doing..Nurses and doctors is wearing mask, glove, gown, because they want the patient to be safe from any microorganism..this is the preventive way to avoid any infection from the patient also to the doctors itself..
